“Mickey 17,” Bong Joon-ho’s New Film, to premiere at Berlinale


Bong Joon-ho, the renowned South Korean director best known for his Oscar-winning masterpiece Parasite (2020), is making his return in 2025 with Mickey 17a sci-fi black comedy based on Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7. The movie will have its international premiere at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, held from February 13 to 23. Following this, Mickey 17 Mickey17 will be released in South Korean theatres on February 28 and in the United States on March 7.

The story of Mickey 17

The film follows Mickey Barnes, an “expendable” – a cloneable employee sent on highly dangerous missions to aid in colonizing the icy planet Niflheim. Each time Mickey dies, his body is regenerated, retaining most of his memories. However, when Mickey 17 unexpectedly survives a fatal incident and discovers a new duplicate, Mickey 18, has already been created, the story takes a surprising and intriguing turn. The film explores themes of identity, sacrifice, and humanity, blending dark humor with science fiction elements.

From Page to Screen

Filming for Mickey 17 took place in 2022 at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, wrapping up in December of the same year. Bong Joon-ho not only directed the film but also wrote the screenplay, working with Charles Yu to add new literary elements inspired by Edward Ashton’s novel.

The release of the film faced multiple delays, initially scheduled for 2024. Postponements were due to the SAG-AFTRA strike and the need for extensive post-production work. Now, Mickey 17 is ready to captivate audiences worldwide.
